Whether it's in English, Spanish, or both, becoming fluent is a long-term project. Babies work on it even in the womb by absorbing their mothers' language sounds (1). The ability to speak and write a language fluently can take many years.
Dual Language learners who are learning English and Spanish have a big task ahead of them. As we've seen, growing up in the U.S. will promote children's English language learning because of its prominence in schools and media. But what about their Spanish? How can you as a parent or caregiver help nourish your child's Spanish language learning?
  • Speak Spanish with your child (2). Lead by example! Putting in the time and effort to speak Spanish shows your child that Spanish is something to be valued. Speak about little things like the black bird in the blue sky. Speak about big things and talk about your lives.
  • Be part of community events that celebrate the Spanish language and culture (2). Whether it's joining a Pre-K Dual Language program or attending a Latin/Hispanic culture fair, participating in community events brings the Spanish language to life for your child. Live events are to media as live theater is to recorded performances. Both can be enjoyable, but each offers a different educational experience.
  • Highlight Spanish. Look for Spanish and you'll soon notice it everywhere. Listen and sing to songs in Spanish (2). Watch shows and movies in Spanish (2). Find the Spanish words written on the labels of toys or groceries. Dine at restaurants where the food originates from Spanish speaking countries. Read Spanish books and magazines digitally or from the library. Welcome Spanish as part of your child's everyday life.
  • Have fun. The Spanish language learning experience should be positive. Associating Spanish with positive moments will help keep your child engaged and interested in continuing their language journey.
