Mexico currently leads as the largest Spanish speaking country. Colombia, Argentina, Spain, and the U.S. follow closely behind. But the Spanish language continues to grow in the United States. Though Mexico is estimated to retain its place as lead, the United States is estimated to become the second largest Spanish speaking country by the year 2060.
Approximately 42 million people in the United States currently speak Spanish fluently and another 16 million people have some Spanish comprehension. Spanish is the most studied language in the United States at all educational levels. From preschool to university, over 8 million U.S. students were studying Spanish in 2018.
